City Hall Plaza11–04–18

The plaza focuses on the re-distribution of grades on the north and east sides of Boston's City Hall Plaza, a nine-acre public space. Completed in 1969, City Hall and the surrounding Government Center complex embody post-war American ideals but have been critiqued for their scale and elitism. Today, the plaza hosts occasional events but lacks a central role in Boston's public life. The focus is on how the vertical relationships of access, views, and topography can create more varied experiences. The design will consider the plaza’s context, street network, urban history, and its evolving role in serving diverse publics.
