Nocturnal Earth

Programming a 72-acre zoo
Franklin Park, home to a 72-acre zoo, is a space teeming with wildlife. Yet, much of the park’s nocturnal ecosystem remains hidden from view, beyond the physical confines of the zoo. This project explores the potential of Franklin Park after dark, reintroducing nocturnal species such as local bats and fireflies to activate the night landscape and make the invisible visible. By extending the park’s programming into the evening, the project provides nearby communities with access to their neighborhood park beyond standard hours, fostering a deeper connection to the natural environment. As Paul Bogard writes, “the night is when the wild earth comes alive.”
